Kirkland made his mark during his junior season in 1998-99, when he was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week on February 22nd and led UMass with his stellar performances. His efforts that season helped propel UMass to significant victories, as he ranked first in offensive rebounds, fifth in total rebounds, and 10th in defensive rebounds in the Atlantic 10. He finished the year with seven double-doubles, while leading the team in steals 15 times, rebounds 11 times, and scoring on six occasions.

As a sophomore in 1997-98, Kirkland contributed across the board in his 31-game appearance, averaging 4.8 points and 2.9 rebounds in conference play. His first career double-double came in a standout performance against La Salle, where he posted 13 points and 10 rebounds.

During his freshman year (1996-97), Kirkland was a role player who showcased his potential, averaging 1.2 points and 1.3 rebounds in 19 games. A memorable moment came when he sealed a win against La Salle with an electrifying play, completing a three-point play followed by a dunk in the final minutes.
